Introduction Junior Database Administrator Pretoria Perform routine health checks on database instances, including space utilisation, transaction log growth, scheduled job status and error log review, escalating anomalies in line with defined thresholds. Principal Accountabilities Perform routine health checks on database instances, including space utilisation, transaction log growth, scheduled job status and error log review, escalating anomalies in line with defined thresholds. Execute scheduled maintenance activities such as index rebuilds and reorganisation, statistics updates and consistency checks, and assist with patching, service pack deployment and version upgrades. Monitor daily backup jobs across all supported instances, remediate or escalate failures, and perform periodic restore testing to validate backup integrity and recoverability against defined recovery objectives. Assist in maintaining, documenting and testing disaster recovery and high availability configurations, ensuring recovery procedures remain current and executable. Monitor database performance metrics and alerting dashboards, identify long running, blocking or resource intensive queries, and contribute to query and index optimisation under senior guidance. Administer user accounts, roles and permissions in accordance with least privilege principles, processing access requests through the approved access and change management workflow. Support audit and compliance activity through the review of database audit logs, the collection of audit evidence, and adherence to data protection legislation and internal data governance standards. Respond to database related service desk tickets within agreed service levels, providing first and second line support to developers, analysts and business users. Prepare, submit and implement change requests in non-production and production environments in accordance with change management procedures, ensuring adequate testing and rollback provision. Support development and testing teams through database refreshes, data masking and environment provisioning, using repeatable and documented processes. Develop and maintain automation scripts for repetitive operational tasks using platform appropriate scripting languages, reducing manual effort and operational risk. Create and maintain database documentation, runbooks, configuration registers and knowledge base articles, ensuring they remain accurate and accessible.
